|It’s time for Lindsborg Våffeldagen, a celebration of spring and the wonders of the humble waffle.
On Saturday, March 25, enjoy hot waffles, waffle-y savories and sweets, waffle games, and waffle photo ops around the town. Listings of restaurant offerings and serving times will be available at local merchants; however, the first hot waffles will be available at 6:00 a.m. and the last about 4:00 p.m.
Almost as popular as the edibles are Lindsborg’s distinctive Waffle People. In a purely Lindsborg twist, local residents dress in waffle costumes to roam the community bringing laughter and greetings of the season. Waffle People can be seen at Scott’s Hometown Foods from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and in various public locations between 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
“Våffeldagen has become one of Lindsborg’s quirky, never-know-who-you’ll-see-in-a-funny-hat days,” said volunteer Kathy Richardson. “People love to be out, eating, chatting and hamming it up."
New features from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. this year:
• a giant, durable waffle jigsaw puzzle near Chestnut Studios at 118 S. Main St. Designed by Carla Wilson, this delightful puzzle may be solved and re-scrambled by people of all ages.
• a "Feed the Viking" game near First Bank Kansas at 118 N. Main St. Players may toss plastic waffles into the mouth of large Viking painted on a large board.
• a Waffle Selfies Photo Area near Lindsborg Community Library at 111 S. Main Street. The public may don a waffle costume and use various props to ham it up for their cellphone cameras. We ask that photos shared on social media be hash tagged #waffledayLBK and #noplacelikeKS.
Why waffles? What is Våffeldagen?
Literally translated from Swedish, våffeldagen means waffle day. The word sounds a lot like the Swedish word vårfrudagen, which refers to the Annunciation, a Christian holiday marking the nine-month mark before the birth of Jesus. Because of misunderstandings and mispronunciations over many hundreds of years, the humble waffle became Sweden's and much of Europe’s symbol of spring and renewal.
