  1. Red Barn Studio Artist-in-Residence: Fiber artist, Shin-hee Chin of McPherson, KS

December 3, 2017 - January 13, 2018 @ Red Barn Studio Museum, 212 S. Main St., Lindsborg For more information call 785 227-2217, or email raymer@redbarnstudio.org. The Red Barn Studio is open Tuesday through Friday, 10AM to 5PM and Saturday and Sunday 1PM to 5PM and by appt.

Shin-hee Chin originally from South Korea came to the United States in 1988. She says, “While this project has undergone several evolutions, ultimately, it sets out to explore the potential mixtures or cultural hybridization. The medium I chose, as well as the method I used to link it, reflect how I have come to view my identity and American culture. As I begin to see my ‘Asianness,’ not as intrinsic and immutable, but rather in constant flux, I conceive American culture as being molded by its carriers into new arrangements. The primary goal of the project is to produce several quilts by using old quilts which I obtained from friends and thrift shops. The slow, repetitive nature of stitching enables me to be more mindful of the present of time and the passage of time. I symbolically partake in creating a new synthesis, not as a passive and silenced woman but as an active maker of my own culture.”

  3. Red Barn Studio Artist-in-Residence: Fiber artist, Shin-hee Chin - Reception

January 12, All Day @ Red Barn Studio Museum For more information call 785 227-2217, or email raymer@redbarnstudio.org.

Shin-hee Chin will be exhibiting and creating fiber art through abstract stitching on recycled fabrics. In particular, Shin-hee Chin creates pictorial quilts of landscape scenes using thread work. Besides her fiber art, Chin creates collages that combine oil painting, fiber and used materials. Her beautiful scenes are of grasses or a lone tree in a field, or gold fish swimming in a circle. Of her work, she says, “It is an effort to re-valorize women’s labor and work by reinterpreting them as a positive creative act. Through the incorporation of fabric, fiber and thread, I convert the conventional ‘feminine’ activity of needle work into a medium for the making of art. The slow repetitive nature of stitching enables me to be more mindful of the present, and the passage of time. I symbolically partake in creating a new synthesis, not as a passive and silenced woman but as an active maker of my own culture.” Find Shin-hee Chin on her website: http://www.shinheechin.com.
