St. Lucia Day

Saturday, December 9

In the midst of famine, during the darkness and misery of winter, Lucia was said to have steered a ship shining with light and filled with food across the waters of Lake Vänern in the province of Värmland, saving the people of Sweden from starvation. The eldest daughters of Swedish families wake early on December 13th to serve saffron buns, ginger cookies and coffee to her family. She wears a white gown with a red sash and a crown of lingonberry branches with seven lit candles. The greenery and light represents new life during the Winter Solstice. This favorite Swedish holiday tradition, is observed in Lindsborg on the second weekend in December. Join us in celebrating the St. Lucia festival. The day begins at 10:00 a.m. with live holiday music downtown. A processional of girls in white, carrying candles and stjärngosse (star boys) lead the crowd to Bethany Lutheran Church where the annual St. Lucia is crowned. The new Lucia goes among the crowd serving ginger cookies and coffee.
